Group Discussions (GD)
GDs are a part of many interview processes in the current recruitment scene. All jobseekers should have good practice by participating in as many mock sessions as possible. GD helps in assessing certain skills that cannot be evaluated in a personal interview. Group discussions are usually used in the selection process for admissions into management courses, jobs, etc., where there is a high level of competition.
What is the Recruiter looking for in a Group Discussion session ?
Evaluation criteria in Group Discussions
- Ability to interact.
- Ability to co-operate.
- Ability to lead & control discussions.
- Ability to persuade other people.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to encourage discussion.
- Ability to think logically.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Ability to make decisions.
- Ability to stick to your viewpoint.
- Ability to cope with pressure.
The usual complaints voiced by GD participants is that they do not get a chance to speak. Actually, in a GD, unless it is structured, you will not get a chance to speak. You will have to make your chances.
When you speak, what you say should be meaningful and very relevant to the topic given.
A meaningful contribution suggests that you have good knowledge, are able to structure arguments logically and are a good
communicator. These are qualities that are desired by all evaluators.
