The Listening Sub Test
- Four sections. ( Each about 4/5 minutes.)
- Conversation 2/3 people
- Monologue social or functional nature
- Conversation 2 to 4 people
- Lecture or Speech academic setting
- Total test time: Approx. 30 minutes
- 40 questions in total
- (20 minutes listening + 10 minutes to transfer answers to answer sheet
- Read & understand test instructions
- Each section you will hear only ONCE
Types of questions Chosen from the following types
- Multiple choice.
- Short answer questions.
- Sentence completion.
- Notes/table/summary flow-chart/diagram completion.
- Labelling a diagram which has numbered parts.
- Classification.
- Matching
- Table and form completion
Test Tips
The recording is played only once, so listen carefully.
Before listening to each section, always read the
questions quickly and carefully. Identify key words which will give you an idea of what you are going to hear and what you need to listen for. Key words in each question on the question booklet like "when", "where", "who" and "what" which tell you what to listen for. Answer the questions as you listen.
If you miss an answer, dont panic, keeping listening for the next answer.
The speakers often correct themselves. They will say something initially and then change the statement. Watch for such instances.
Write your answer immediately on the question sheet itself. The ten minutes provided at the end of the test are quite sufficient to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
The Reading Sub Test
- 3 Sections
- Reading passage in each section.
- Topics General interest
- 40 questions
- Each section about 10 -15 questions
- Time: 60 minutes
- Read & understand test instructions
Types of questions Chosen from the following types
- Multiple choice.
- Short answer questions.
- Sentence completion.
- Notes/table/summary flow-chart/diagram completion.
- Yes, No, Not Given OR True, False, Not given.
- Classification.
- Matching lists/phrases.
- Choosing headings for paragraphs/sections of a text
- Scanning & identifying location of information

The Writing Sub Test
Two Tasks
- Task 1 - Time given: 20 minutes. Not less than 150 words.
- Task 2 Time given: 40 minutes. Not less than 250 words.
Writing Task 1 (AM)
One or more of the following:-
- Describe and interpret graphic data (Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts & tables)
- Describe the stages of a process or procedure.
- Describe an object or event or sequence of events.
- Explain how something works.
Writing Task 2 (AM)
- Agree or Disagree.
- Choose and defend a point of view.
- Explain reasons, causes or results.
- Compare and prefer.
- What if..
- Advantages and disadvantages.

Important notes During Practice & Test
- Read and understand instructions
- Check grammar, spelling & punctuation.
- Keep track of time.
- On the question paper, use a highlighter pen to mark key words, relevant points & phrases.
- Only Listening test has answer transfer time.
- Write LEGIBLY and speak clearly.
